Miscellaneous/General: NGAL is a bacteriostatic cytokine secreted by neutrophils as part of the innate immune system. It can also be expressed by endothelial cells and cancer cells and can either inhibit or promote migration, tumor growth, and angiogenesis. It activates the metalloproteinase MMP-9 (gelatinase B) and protects it from degradation. It also regulates iron levels through interaction with siderophores. Lipocalin 2 is implicated in inflammation, anemia, and insulin resistance and serves as a marker of renal function. Can be used in vitro and in vivo.
