Miscellaneous/General: To date, 27 proteins containing ubiquitin-interacting motifs (UIMs) have been identified in humans. The S5a UIM requires a string of at least four Lys48-linked ubiquitins for efficient binding. S5a of higher eukaryotes has two UIMs, located near each other in the C-terminal portion of the molecule. The C-terminal UIM by itself binds polyubiquitin chains as efficiently as full-length S5a protein, whereas the N-terminal UIM alone binds polyubiquitin chains less efficiently.
