Historically, countries and organizations have developed
different laws about how to identify the hazardous
properties of chemicals (called ‘classification criteria’) and
how information regarding these hazards should be
communicated to the end-user.
This situation has shown to be confusing because
the same chemical may have different hazardous
descriptions in different countries, multiple labels and
different Material Safety Data Sheets. It was recognized that
these difference could impact both protection of individuals
and property and trade.
The UN developed the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) to
provide an internationally comprehensive system for
hazardous communication and facilitate international trade
in chemicals whose hazards have been properly assessed
and identified on an international basis. Additionally it
provides a recognized standard framework. GHS offers the
opportunity to bring product safety to a high level
worldwide and contribute to improved safety, health, and
environmental measures on a global level:
